4.0 out of 5 stars Toshiba 32" LED TV, May 28, 2011
This review is from: Toshiba 32SL400U 32-Inch 720p Ultra Thin LED HDTV, Black (Electronics)
I've had this television for about two months and it is everything that I expected and more. The only reason I didn't give it a five star is because of the sound from the speakers. It is fine for a bedroom (which is where we use it) but not if you want to use it someplace different. Great picture and great quality. I would recommend it to anyone for the price.

If you always (and I mean for everything) run external speakers, the sound won't be an issue. But if you're like me and want to use external surround sound just for watching movies or your favorite action TV series, but feel it's overkill for every day viewing, this may not be the TV- it reminds me of the old tin a.m. radio on my dad's workbench in the garage. I don't want to run surround sound for news, talk shows and regular sitcoms, but this TV sounds so bad that the speakers just are not adequate for every day viewing or for watching movies. I returned it and bought a Sony Bravia 1080 LCD. The extra inch or two in thickness was an acceptable payoff for the vastly better sound quality.. And the LCD picture is just as good if not better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected!, November 28, 2011

This review is from: Toshiba 32SL400U 32-Inch 720p Ultra Thin LED HDTV, Black (Electronics)
We purchased this last year for the family for Christmas - our first flatscreen television! It is wonderful. The picture quality is excellent. We had extended family over for Christmas and my brother, an engineer who spent about eight months researching before he bought his last flat screen television, said the picture quality was better than his. We are very happy with it.

There is one thing that is a bit of a glitch though - the picture size changes mid-way through movies. We just re-set it to whatever size we want, and it's not a big deal for us, but it can be a little annoying.

For the price we are extremely pleased with the quality of this television and would purchase a Toshiba electronic again.

During the '40s, MGM's Tom and Jerry series was animation's gold standard, challenging Disney in the Animated Short Film Oscar category. The lavishly produced shorts featured polished animation, brash slapstick gags, and lush watercolor backgrounds. The series, which began in 1940 with "Puss Gets the Boot," ran for 15 years and won seven Oscars. Many of these cartoons follow the pattern set in "Puss Gets the Boot": housekeeper Mammy Two-Shoes (voiced by Lillian Randolph) warns Tom that if he makes a mess or fails to catch the mice, he's out on his ear ("O-W-T, out!"). Jerry overhears the threat and makes trouble. In cartoons where Mammy doesn't appear, Jerry finds other reasons (or excuses) to cause problems for Tom. But the stories are only fast-paced vehicles for the animated gags, like Tom's exaggerated jitterbug in "Zoot Cat" or his jaw-dropping, bug-eyed "takes" in "Mouse Cleaning." The Golden Collection features cartoons from 1940 to 1948, and includes the Oscar winners "The Yankee Doodle Mouse," "Mouse Trouble," "Quiet Please!" and "The Cat Concerto." The transfers were made from excellent prints and look terrific. Unlike previous re-dubbed video releases, Mammy Two-Shoes' dialogue is presented intact, although the subtitles offer the cleaned-up versions from the previous Spotlight Collection. In "Old Rockin' Chair Tom," she declares, "If you is a mouser, I is Lana Turner, which I ain't"; the subtitles read, "If you're a mouser… I'm Lana Turner, which I'm not." An introductory statement proclaims that the ethnic stereotypes "were wrong then and are wrong today," which misses the point. The stereotypical African-American maid and blackface gags were considered good fun and good taste in the era of Amos and Andy; that they are no longer acceptable reflects the social progress of the intervening decades. (Unrated, suitable for ages 7 and older: cartoon violence, ethnic stereotypes) --Charles Solomon

5.0 out of 5 stars The REAL cartoons for serious collectors, June 30, 2011
    By
I made no secret of my distaste for the censored version of the Tom and Jerry shorts available on the Tom and Jerry - Spotlight Collection DVD. Not only was history whitewashed to satisfy the PC Brigade (just who ARE these people anyway?) they were also in shocking condition with lots of dirt and scratches and generally terrible picture quality.

All is now fixed for this Blu Ray release from Warner, presenting the first 37 shorts, in chronological order, with brand new 1080p transfers from the best 35mm materials, Dolby 5.1 sound (HD sound is not confirmed at the time of writing, but these cartoons WERE released in Mono anyway and DD 5.1 is still a notable upgrade) and, most importantly, UN-EDITED AND UN-CENSORED. You will finally be able to see the REAL Mammy-Two-Shoes voiced by Lillian Randolph, and various other 'racially... Read more

This review is from: Tom & Jerry Golden Collection: Volume One (DVD)
At long last; the Tom and Jerry set to end them all! Don't be fooled, this isn't you're ordinary Tom and Jerry set because this 2-disc set features the first 37 shorts in chronological order uncut and uncensored and restored and remastered for the first time (I understand the transfer will be remarkable)! Plus, some of these shorts include their original title cards for the first time anywhere on any format! Plus bonus features including 9 commentaries and a new retrospective documentary. Truly the ultimate Tom and Jerry set...ever!

DVD Verdict (Santa Monica, CA) - See all my reviews
    (TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Clark Douglas, DVD Verdict --The first attribute is the chronological structure, which I imagine many fans (myself included) will be thrilled about. The first 37 Tom and Jerry theatrical shorts (beginning with their 1940 debut "Puss Gets the Boot" and continuing through the 1948 installment "Professor Tom") are presented in order over two Blu-ray discs, and it finally gives us an easy way to observe the subtle evolution of the characters over the years. The first impression one gets from watching these early Hanna-Barbera installments is that the famously antagonistic dynamic between the characters was firmly in place from the very beginning; there aren't any of those odd early shorts in which the characters feel like mere shadows of the icons they would eventually become (despite the fact that Tom looks a little strange and is named "Jasper" in his very first outing).

Animation purists will be pleased to note that this collection has indeed preserved the shorts as they... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent new model TV at unbelievable price, December 11, 2010
This review is from: Toshiba 40UL605U 40-Inch 1080p 120 Hz Ultra Thin LED HDTV, Black (Electronics)
Got this TV less than a week ago, at an unbelievable price (especially considering this TV is new for the second half of 2010)

First, the basics: bezel is not too thick, and the TV set is very thin. Mind you, not as thin as those 1cm top-line Samsungs or LGs but for around 700 bucks I wouldn't get nitpicky. This TV is feather weight; as indicated it weights a bit over 30 lbs with the stand. Look is very clean.

Inputs: 4x HDMI is plenty, and component video doubles as composite (so you can't hook up both at once). PC (VGA) input supports up to around 1368 x 768 resolution. Have no idea why, but this is stated by the manufacturer so be warned. I suggest using a cheap DVI to HDMI or VGA to HDMI adapter (if the computer doesn't have HDMI already) for getting 1920x1080 resolution from your computer.

Picture quality: Excellent. Contrast, black levels all very good. Reproduction of colors is also very good out of the box, though there are plenty of menu items... Read more

I have owned 3 different HDTVs before this one (Toshiba 56" 720p DLP, Viewsonic 37" 60Hz 720p LCD, and Panasonic 42" 720p Plasma). My living room, where this tv is used, is pretty dimly lit. We have our couch and recliner about 7-8' away from the screen, which is about perfect for this size screen. I use this TV mainly for PS3 games and blu-ray movies.

Picture: This is by far the best picture quality in my house. The screen is much brighter and crisper than the other technologies. This being my first 1080p and my first LEDtv I was sort of put off by what Andrew Jing mentions in his review here:

By Andrew Jing: **Note on 120hz: don't buy this or any other TV only for the ClearFrame, MotionFlow, etc. It makes filmed content (native 24p or 30p) look really weird. The classic example is the movie vs. daytime soap opera effect. It can make filmed content look like it was shot through a home camcorder. Obviously, if you watch live sports, etc. this is helpful,... Read more

Amazon service and shipping was excellent. TV arrived and set up was easy. Very disappointed in the speaker sound. Sounded like a cheap AM/FM clock radio. I was not sure what to expect out of one of these skinny TV's but this seems to be a common problem according to one of the sales reps at my local big box electronics store. I went ahead and purchased a Sony HT-CT150 sound bar to compliment the TV and it is awesome. The TV has an excellent picture and now a sound to match. Great black & whites with some good presets for sports, movies etc... If your really technical, I am not sure the HDMI ports on this TV are the 1.4 version. You may want to check with Toshiba. This has to do with an ARC feature that I learned about when hooking up the sound bar system but it was no bid deal for me. Family members over for Thanksgiving said the picture on this TV was excellent and looked better than what ever they have.
