Product Description
Most Sonic the Hedgehog games are specifically for Sega related platforms but Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is an original game made for the Nintendo GameCube. Sonic and crew need to stop Dr. Eggman from his nasty tricks again. There's new characters brought into the Sonic universe! A mysterious dark hedgehog called Shadow and a bat named Rouge. The Sonic Adventure 2 Battle has been enhanced with graphics, doubling the framerate and now is set as a multiplayer system.
Amazon.com Review
Sega's mascot made his 3-D debut on the Dreamcast, but with the demise of that system the zippy blue hedgehog is popping up everywhere--including on the GameCube. Unfortunately, his first next-gen appearance, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, is marred by the same 3-D camera problems that plagued the Dreamcast version, and the multiplayer "battle" component isn't all that it's cracked up to be.
Right out of the gate, players have the option of choosing Hero (Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles) or Dark (Dr. Eggman, Shadow, and Rouge) quests, which are completely different. Sonic and his dark counterpart Shadow traverse levels at warp speed colleting coins and power-ups while fighting enemies in the game's most exhilarating moments. Unfortunately, the other characters are nowhere near as fun to play. Dr. Eggman and Tails fight through levels that require little more than constant button-mashing to shoot an endless procession of enemies, and Knuckles and Rouge participate in seemingly endless levels that require searching for a variety of objects.
Graphically, the game is a bit of a letdown considering the processing muscle of GameCube. Models are fairly simplistic, and level textures are sometimes bland. Game Boy Advance owners can use a link cable to download Chao from the game and train them on the go, but the rewards for doing so are minor considering the time investment involved. The main feature this game offers over its Dreamcast predecessor is the variety of multiplayer modes, which are fun but offer none of the depth or replayability of standalone multiplayer games like Super Smash Bros. Melee. Still, they are nice additions--especially the racing games--and round out a flawed single-player component. Sonic addicts who missed this game the first time around on the Dreamcast will definitely want to check it out, but the finicky camera, tedious non-Sonic/Shadow levels in single-player mode, and surprisingly shallow multiplayer components (especially the Chao games) turn what could have been a great game into a mere good one. --T. Pros:
- Plenty of variety
- Sonic/Shadow levels are pure, unadulterated fun
- Knuckles/Rouge levels are tedious
- Multiplayer aspects could use some more depth
- 12 playable characters
- an array of modes
- two-player action

40 of 41 people found the following review helpful Sonic is back!, By A Customer This review is from: Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (Video Game) SA2B has to be one of the best games I have ever played. Here's why:As soon as you play the first level of the Hero storyline (my favorite level), you'll be hooked. With two storyline's and 180 missions to complete, you won't be done with this game for a while. There's even a secret storyline... Multiplayer modes are insanely fun. While you can only play with 2 players at a time, the amount of fun you get makes up for it. There are many Multiplayer modes: Action Race, Robot Battle, Treasure hunt, Chao racing, Chao Karate, and Kart racing. There are some pretty original ideas. You can grind down rails and slide down city streets on a snowboard while pulling crazy tricks off ramps. The music in this game is unbeatable. The storyline is very good, offering suspense, action, and even a few touching moments. You can raise adorable little creatures called chao. You can even transfer chao from Sonic Advance into your chao garden. I never thought I'd be playing Sonic on a Nintendo console but he seems right at home on the fantastic Gamecube! I haven't played the Dreamcast version so I can't compare the two but the graphics for this version are amazing! there is so much detail and it's soooooo fast! When you start your main game you have the choice of playing the hero side with Sonic and friends or the dark side with Shadow and co. this makes the main game even more interesting. The multiplayer is also allot of fun there are seven mimi games three of which have to be unlocked (I'm still trying to get the last one) my favourite is racing down the city streets it's a blast literally! This is one of the must have titles along with Smash Bros. Melee for the Gamecube. Like it predecessors it's a classic already. 13 of 13 people found the following review helpful THIS IS WAY BEYOND AWESOME!!!!!!!!!, By Justin Gagen (Queen Creek, AZ USA) - See all my reviews This review is from: Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (Video Game) Sonic Adventure 2 Battle is one of the best Gamecube games ever. I got it about 2 months ago AND I'M HOOKED ON IT!!!! It's so good, I just broke my wrist and STILL playing it. Heck, I'm gonna go play it after I write this review. If your a gamer who likes high speed games, you'll love it. If you like a great plot, you'll love it. If you want a slow and easy game, you'll love the chao raising system. Of course you will have to go through the levels to get the items requiered (My spelling is horrible...) to do it. The Battle system isn't all it is cracked up to be. Each one lasts about 30 seconds. Unless you're doing a race battle which takes about 2 minutes. The hero and dark story is a nice twist on the gaming world. Save the world, or destroy it? (man my fingers are starting to hurt from typing...) The bottem line is...it's worth every penny. If you say this review wasn't helpful, well it should of been. If you say yes, I'll write a beginning walkthrough to get you started-and... Read more |
