R-Type III

Product Description

It was believed on Earth that the deadly BYDO Empire had been destroyed--but now they've returned, as nasty as ever. Their ships and armies are more powerful than before, and Earth will surely be conquered unless the new R-90 ship can destroy them. Powered with engines that launch it into different dimensions, and armed with the Round, Shadow, and Cyclone Forces, R-90 has what it takes to wipe out the BYDO threat. Then, the BYDO mother ship must be found and destroyed to entirely erase the species from our galaxy.

4.0 out of 5 stars My "type" of game., November 10, 2008
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: R-Type III (Video Game)
This game is pretty damn cool. It is a challenging, yet not impossible side-view space shooter with great graphics and awesome power-ups. You get to pick between 3 types of detachable ship cannons, and you can switch to hyper mode, which is ausome too. Also, the checkpoint system is very good, because you don't have to go back to the 1st level once you lose all your ships and get game over. You get to start in the same level, at the same checkpoint, just without the ship power-ups. Also, much like the gradius series, there is no r-type II (at least for americans) just the original, and III.

The only thing i'm wondering about is the price. 100 bones and up? when i bought it from ebay (for a grip less,) the cheapest amazon had it at was 240!! does anyone know why? is this game hard to find or rare?

5.0 out of 5 stars Best shooter of this generation (imho), March 31, 2012
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: R-Type III (Video Game)
There were lots of good shooters in the nes and snes days. Assuming we're talking about ship shooters, this game is the best of the series (at least prior to r type final) and best of this generation.

Pros:
Incredibly difficult but keeps your attention; the difficulty makes you want to keep playing instead of turn it off.
Excellent gameplay (3 types of forces that do different things).
Great bosses and other enemies.
Extremely strategic (less bullet hell, more "thinking man's shooter); if you just use auto shoot in certain areas you will die...badly.
Not short at all.

Cons:
Reverse lava stage.
Some of the enemies are slightly "cheap"...the flying hands!

R-type is one series that I can keep playing after I beat it. You should try and track this game down if possible, it is excellent. Just be sure you have an extremely precise controller if you try and tackle this game!

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid shooter and one of the better R-Type games available!, August 18, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: R-Type III (Video Game)
This particular R-Type title seems to be more rare than most and was a SNES / Super Famicom exclusive. imo it is definitely one of the better games in the series and is a brutal shooting challenge from start to finish. The stage designs in this game are imaginative, the graphics are sharp and vivid with good color and it throws in new some extras to make things more interesting. There are 3 force units for your ship: the standard one (like original R-Type), Cyclone and Shadow. They each have different special weapon capability, strengths and weaknesses. Your ship still has the signature power blast, but they take it one step further and give you a "hyper mode" that turns your ship into an explosion wielding beast for a temporary length of time. Unfortunately this mode causes your ship to overheat for a little bit after use, so it must be used sparingly.

My only complaint about R-Type III is the difficulty level. Its your standard R-Type fare and is virtually impossible. I... Read more
