I left my kayak top up during a heavy rain and used this pump to make short work of few inchs of water. You can attach a hose to the top port (not included) but for a kayak, I didn't need it at all. The grip-tight handle always affords a stable grasp, it sucks up far more water than most other bilge pumps, and it creates a strong enough spray to wash your boat while you are still in the cockpit. It also performs admirably in boat-to-boat bilge pump battles, and for shooing off overly aggressive seagulls and terns. I have not had the pleasure of performing any "wet exits" in a while, but this pump gives me great confidence in my ability to self-rescue quickly and safely.
