As a long-time volleyball referee, I love the Pearl whistles. I have 7 different referee whistles and the Fox 40 Pearl is one of the two that I use the most. The Pearl is, in my opinion, more versatile than the original Fox 40 because its tone is not quite as obtrusive. It's a far better choice in a smaller gym. The sound penetrates crowd noise well and is distinct enough to use during tournament play. Because it's not quite as loud as a Fox, it might not be quite as good for a "rescue" device, but I don't think that's what its primary mission is. If you're buying it as a referee or a coach, get it. I purchased this Fox 40 whistle for my husband as he also works as a Non-Skating Official (NSO) for the rising "Womens Roller Derby" Craze! He has always been in the "safety area" of any work he does and you can't misplace it in our roller derby bag. You can find it fast. The Fox 40 also can be heard from a mile away. We tested that at a training class this past year and it can even be heard through two concrete walls, all the doors closed in the heart of an Industrial Ship, shipping area. A GREAT WHISTLE".
