My kids play soccer and understand the meaning of the cards. So they get a verbal warning..........then a yellow card and if they are not careful then its red card and a trip to their room. The visits last the amount of minutes of their age for the first infraction........second 2X then 3X.......it is pretty effective. You dont have to argue or explain......just send them off the field. If you are a ref........the cards are great.
